Movie Nights at the Park

  • PDF

people in front of a movie screen at the parkWhen the weather warms up, we'll continue hosting free monthly movie nights in partnership with City Heights Community Development Corporation, Metro Villas Learning Center and the City Heights Recreation Council. In this fun, family-friendly event for the City Heights community, the film is projected onto a large outdoor screen at Teralta Neighborhood Park at 40th Street and Orange Ave.

The event has attracted up to 300 residents, who eagerly come to the park with arms full of snacks, blankets and chairs in order to make themselves at home for a few hours. The attendees love the free popcorn served fresh from an old-fashioned machine. Many Spanish-speaking residents and others representative of the many cultures of City Heights enjoy the outing.

Keeping parks and neighborhoods safe is not a job that is done only by local police, but requires residents communicating with neighbors, being aware of their surroundings, and participating in events such as these, designed to bring people together. Residents have fun and feel safe at this nighttime outdoor event, surrounded by a huge group of locals and the two Heritage Security guards who attend. Info on future movies showings will be posted on our Facebook page.

paigeHello! I am Paige Newman, Safety and Security Program Organizer at City Heights Foundation. After teaching English as a Second Language in South America and then in San Diego to people from around the world, I began working with nonprofits serving refugees and immigrants six years ago.

At City Heights Foundation, I enjoy facilitating the Collaboration to Keep City Heights Youth Safe and partnering with many inspired people to make the area safer through movie nights and other community events. With the help of volunteers, I will be setting up a safety network for the roughly 700 culturally diverse businesses in our district so they connect with each other and law enforcement.

Collaboration to Keep City Heights Youth Safe

In May of 2011, City Heights Foundation spearheaded the Collaboration to Keep City Heights Youth Safe. The goal of the committee is to be proactive in addressing the needs of youth in City Heights through collaborative efforts, helping to prevent youth violence and other negative behaviors. Representatives from about 10-15 local organizations attend the monthly meetings.

The first project is a youth career and resource fair which will guide youth in finding employment and provide mentorship through many community organizations.  The event is planned for April 28 from 10 am - 2pm at Mid-City Gym.

A listing of local events and services to keep City Heights youth safe can be found at: http://cityheightsyouth.wordpress.com/.
